Email Report from 1st Week

Hello to all. I'm hoping you are receiving this since sending out through this Internet account is a problem here. We are having a great time and being well taken care of. This is a beautiful place--lots of greenery, mountains, cool weather, and nice people. Port Moresby was very hot and humid but we only had to be there two days. Ukarumpa has been very cool and rainy this week. There is a fireplace here in the guest house and we have had a fire several days so we could sit by the fire and read. But today, Sunday, was just beautiful. It was real foggy early this morning but it lifted about 8:00, the sun came out, and it was warm and beautiful with a cool breeze. We went to the teen service with about 150 kids. It was fun and upbeat with great music and a lesson by Mike Sweeney of Pioneer Bible Translators. Then we went to the English service with adults--the first service in the meeting hall is Pigin and the English second. They have a little orchestra with piano, bass, trombone, violin, and guitar plus a vocal group. The sermon was from a translator who is also a pastor in New Zealand.

On our tour here the first day we went through the lobby of the director's office where there is a gallery of New Testament completions by Wycliffe/SIL here in PNG. It was awe inspiring to see the translatioin teams and to imagine the level of sacrifice and commitment to work here. We saw a number of familar names and faces of people that we have met or heard of. Things are pretty tough here now, I can't imagine what it was like to arrive here in 1960.

Here is a shot of lunch at the guest house last Wednesday. The older couple are with Wycliffe Associates and have been out on one of the islands running the office as volunteers for 17 months. If you have the time and inclination to do such a thing, there is a continuing need for people like this. They describe a wonderful, fulfilling experience. I think they are in their early 70s but working like this will keep them perpetually young!

One last picture--we went to market on Friday morning. It was pouring down rain during the night but let up about 6:00am. We went to the market at 6:45. It is only open until 7:30. We bought a bag of beautiful strawberries which we went back to the guest house and had for breakfast. We also bought some fruit that we had never seen before called laulau--had the consistency of and tasted kind of like apples. We also bought some little wood carvings. And we didn't have to bargain either.

We are taking lots of pictures (but it's never enough). We were with the Cresons last week (President Bob and his wife) but now are on our own this week. We have a variety of meetings and appointments for next week so expect to be busy. We are making some acquaintances and have invitations to dinner as least a couple of nights including an evening with all the Pioneer Bible Translators here.

We will tell you all about it when we get home.
