Central Africa Regional Directors

National Bible Translation Organizations (NBTOs) exist in several of the Central African countries. These include CABTAL in Cameroon, ACOTBA-SUBO in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Central African Association for Bible Translation and Literacy, and the Congolese Association for Bible Translation and Literacy (Congo-Brazzaville). Those other acronyms are in French and I don't know how they translate. These are generally small struggling organizations that are desperately short of all kinds of resources including people, money, computers, transportation, and the like. However, they are not short on spirit or desire to translate the Scripture for the minority language groups of their countries. Most of those countries have French as their primary national language. That remains from colonial days but, because of tribal rivalries and hostilities, it would be difficult and probably impossible to select one of the indigenous languages as the national language. Such a choice would elevate that ethnic group over the others and lead to violence as seen in many areas between the ethnic groups.

I was very impressed by the commitment, depth of Christian life, love for the Scripture, concern for their people and churches, and the openness of these leaders. We prayed together, laughed together, ate together, and fellowshipped in a wonderful spirit of brotherhood and Christian love. I must say that I really enjoyed the time that I spent with these men.
