Xplore Translation
Have fun with language learning, find out about how translation happens, how to learn about other cultures and what it’s like working in a language project. What we learn in this one day training course focusses on meeting some friends from Southern Sudan. We get to enjoy their distinctive cuisine over lunch! NEWS For NSW & QLD– MAY 2008 · Xplore Translation on 14 June, Sat. Have fun with language learning and find out how Bible translation comes together while meeting friends from another culture. Xplore Translation is a great opportunity to spend a day getting a well-rounded overview of what Wycliffe people are involved in. It’s an opportunity not to be missed if you are thinking of becoming a prayer partner or an advocate for people without Scripture in your church. The course is also a good introduction for those considering being involved as a Volunteer or a participant in a short-term field experience. There are four workshops: Learning Language, Translation, Scripture Use and Learning Culture. The workshops are interactive with the examples focussing in on the language and culture of our host culture friends. Lunch is always a highlight, when we enjoy a cultural meal together! - In Language Learning, have fun getting a practical introduction to learning language and recognising unfamiliar speech sounds.
- Wouldn’t it be much easier if there really was a ‘Babel Fish’ that we could put in our ear and hear a translation of any language in the world? In Translation you’ll get a picture of how it’s really done! Translating the meaning of something from one language to another actually isn’t just an intellectual exercise. It involves spending time with real people and getting to know them – finding out how they view and describe their world and discovering the richness and quirkiness of their language structures and idioms.
- Through translated Scripture we really want to see people knowing God and growing as disciples. Scripture Use touches on how to help people connect with Scripture, through literacy, printed and recorded Scripture and through Bible storytelling.
- Learning Culture is so important to every aspect of translation. Discover a basic model about how people view the world and find out about some of the things that it’s important for Language Surveyors and Program Planners to learn as they connect with communities.
