Vision 2025

what is
Vision 2025

Vision 2025 proposes that by the year 2025, together with partners worldwide, we aim to see a Bible translation program begun in all the remaining languages that need one. We estimate that as many as 3,000 programs will need to begin in the next twenty years for Vision 2025 to happen. Wycliffe's desire is to see people groups with the Word of God sooner rather than later, while insuring the integrity of translation. As are our current standards, translations done in the future must be faithful to the original and clear to the speakers of the language.

Vision 2025 is a vision for all believers. Wycliffe has always partnered with others around the world, but Vision 2025 has encouraged partnering and networking in new ways around the world with language communities, national churches, seminaries and Bible schools, missions, other Bible agencies and research and educational agencies.

Rising to the Challengeworld map

Of the 3,000 language groups that still need God’s Word, about 90% are located in three geographic regions:
Indo-Pacific Archipelago—1,000 languages
Africa—940 languages
Asia—700 languages

By 2025, together with partners worldwide, we envision Bible translation in progress for every language that needs it.

They've waited long enough . . . for God's Word in their language!
NEARLY HALF OF THE WORLD'S 6,800 LANGUAGES DO NOT HAVE EVEN ONE VERSE OF GOD'S WORD. Millions of people still wait for a translation of the Scriptures. And while these people wait, they are cut off from fully understanding God's love and God's ways.
  • Church planters can't effectively share the Gospel and disciple new Christians without God's Word.
  • Christian radio can't beam Scripture into remote areas unless it has been translated.
  • Evangelism, training, worship—all ministries are hampered unless people have a Bible they can really understand.

The Job Before Us

Today, 2,355 languages have some Scriptures or the entire Bible. About 1,700 Bible translation projects are in progress worldwide. However, 2,644 additional language groups, for whom no translation has even begun, need Scripture that speaks to their hearts.

Geographic Breakdown of Languages Needing Bible Translation
Go to Top
Most Bibleless groups are located in four main geographic zones or clusters, as indicated in the coloured areas on the map below:
*A large proportion of the language groups needing Bible translation are located in the spiritually needy countries of the 10/40 Window, where the Gospel is often resisted and restricted for political, religious and cultural reasons. This area contains two-thirds of the world's population, most of the least-evangelized nations, the largest concentration of Muslims, Hindus and Buddhists, and a majority of the world's poor.

What is Vision 2025? At the current rate of Scripture translation, it could take another 150 years to provide all the Bibleless people groups with God's Word. It's time to change the pace. They've waited long enough! Vision 2025 is a bold call to action and commitment; a firm "no" to the status quo; it's thinking "outside the box" and a willingness to take risks.
There are several key aspects to Vision 2025:
  1. Partnerships: Working in unity with other organizations to jointly do the job.
  2. Training: Equipping Wycliffe's staff with the skills to equip others.
  3. Urgency: Getting the task done more quickly than the status quo will permit.
  4. Vision-sharing: Motivating God's Church everywhere -- at home and in field countries -- to further Bible translation.
  5. Sustainability: Establishing translation projects that continue beyond Wycliffe's involvement.

"Vision 2025 . . . is an attitude that says, 'We are ready to be servants in His hands to serve the nations of the world with His Word. We are ready to change in whatever way He wants us to change. . . .' "

–Dr. John Watters, executive director of
Wycliffe Bible Translators International.

A Vision For You

Right now, leaders of Wycliffe Bible Translators here in Canada and around the world are praying, pondering and questioning: What does Vision 2025 mean to us? Who will join us as partners? How is God going to make it happen?

Right now, people are developing important strategies and plans in response to this radical call to action, known as Vision 2025. Please earnestly pray for this crucial foundation-setting period. It's time for passion, for intensity—to push ahead giving everyone access to the Bible. They've waited long enough!

Vision 2025 can be your vision too. More people with a variety of technical and practical skills are crucial in the Bible translation task. More funds must flow to language projects and to nationals doing Bible translation among their own people. Discover how you can get involved and help make Vision 2025 a reality.
