People working behind the scenes

PLEASE LET THE LAIS KNOW IF YOU WANT TO COMMEND THEIR MINISTRY

A Word from Pastor Tang  -  October 11, 2009

Even though our OutReach Conference is over now, the recollection of the stories I heard from our speakers still echoes in my mind. Dominica Lai, the missionary from Kenya, left with us this touching story. She was the main speaker for our children during the conference. If I had known about her hearing impairment, I might not have assigned her to speak to our children. But the Lord had His own plan in this. At the end of the conference, with tears in her eyes, she gave the following testimony, “Teaching young children and keeping them nice and quiet under control is never my strength. It’s something I try my best to avoid. Deep inside me, I knew I would rather share with the adults. But I was willing to do whatever the Lord wanted me to do. Therefore, instead of avoiding the assignment, I accepted it. I did not want to depend on my own wisdom. I asked God for His strength so that I would not forget His grace and boast on my own goodness. I told the children that a missionary is someone willing to go far away to live with the local people, love them and tell them about Jesus’ love for them. Deep down I knew I did not do a very good job. I felt so bad. I kept thinking negatively: ‘the photos were not sharp’, ‘I did not have enough props’, ‘the games went messy’. I can go on and on in self-pity! But God dealt with this by using a little girl to push me on. I got a note from this little girl in your church. It said, ‘Dear Daniel & Dominica: Thank you for sharing about your mission work. I've been thinking about what you talked about these past few days and decided I might want to be a missionary for God someday. I will pray everyday for you and your mission and that God will give you strength.’” Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up. (Galatians 6:9)

To whom it may concern

Re: the Rev. Daniel Lai

I have known Daniel for over ten years and have been impressed with his Christian commitment, his integrity, his focus on a task, and his capacity to give himself in ministry for others.

Daniel came to Chatswood Baptist Church as a student observer at the beginning of 1994, in his fourth year at Morling, when I was the pastor of the C. B. Church.    His involvement included - children’s activities – participating in AM worship services & interpreting at the AM bilingual service - helping to train Sunday School teachers & teaching English – reaching Chinese people through Multi-Cultural community activities – preaching at the PM service when asked.    I was sorry to lose Daniel from the pastoral team, but God obviously had other plans for him.

It was a privilege to preach at his ordination service in 1997.

I have always found Daniel to be an upright person of principle.    He has a loyal and devoted wife in Dominica, and they have two very bright children, who have great models in their parents.

Working alongside Daniel, I noticed that when he set his mind to a task he saw it through.    While at CBC Daniel took the opportunity to reached out to Chinese people he met in the area; he used every occasion t0 share the Gospel. It seems that wherever he goes Daniel lays the foundation for the formation and growth of new churches.    In Kenya he was used by the Lord to form a new church attended by recent Chinese converts.

Daniel demonstrates loyalty to Jesus; vision and purpose, and he has the ability to inspire people.    In his love for life and people, and his concern for their eternal welfare, and the building up of the Kingdom of God, Daniel does what only many talk of doing.

I commend this godly man to you!

Yours sincerely

Dear Co-Laborer(s):

Greetings! I would like to take this opportunity to express our sincerest gratitude for the ministry of Daniel and Dominica Lai among the Chinese Christian community in Canada. On a number of occasions they have given of themselves to assist us in sharing the vision --- and God has blessed richly. Truly this is a labor of love.

Their recent ministry in three key Western Canadian cities, Edmonton, Calgary and Vancouver, was certainly much appreciated. An added twist this time was that they were accompanied for part of the tour by a Chinese-Canadian couple, recent recruits now headed for E. Asia, whom God had called through the Lai's ministry in Ottawa, our national capital, just a few years ago.

Now that Daniel and Dominica are back on the field and getting settled into their respective roles once again, we wish them God's richest blessing in their lives and ministry.

Our thanks to you, too, for making it administratively possible for the Lai's to continue investing themselves as co-laborers with us as opportunities arise. Our Lord will surely grant the increase. Should this pattern continue to be within the boundaries of His plan, we look forward to additional collaboration in future.

We're all in this together!

In Him,

Garland Hoel
Ex-Ethnic Ministries Director of Wycliffe Canada
