Below are some comments or personal reflections from some participants of the Chinese Missions in Africa- Retreat, Consultation & Action, Discovery Trips from 1 – 12 April 2008:

“It was a privilege to meet those missionaries (you are one of them) whom I have heard so often and admired from a distance and there I was able to meet them in person. Their lives and testimonies inspired and encouraged me. The sermons of the African speakers were strong and inspiring. They were probably the starting point where we have so much to learn from them. My conviction as well as my ministry is to call upon the Chinese churches to make the best out of the current missions opportunity in Africa. I like to see more and more Chinese Christians of professional background would set their feet on Africa as servants and witnesses for His Kingdom.”

Rev Philip Leung of Canada, Executive of Chinese International Mission

I really thank God for the smooth running of the Conference, and safe traveling of all our delegates to and fro and back home. I thank God for all of your good efforts and cooperation in helping to make it possible. It’s a great encouragement and joy for me to be invited to attend this Conference and for the CCCOWE to place more emphasis now on the Chinese mission in Africa…Thank you Brother, May God bless, strengthen and keep you and yours always in His loving care.”

Rev Lily H Hsueh from Malaysia, widow of the late Rev YuKwong Hsueh

“I do appreciate you couple support in this conference, no matter before, during, or after conference. It is so impressive you…Thank you very much on lots logistic or ground support.”

Elder Daniel Huang from New Zealand, Information Systems Management of CCCOWE

“I have been richly blessed by the conference. I came with an open mind to learn more about what Chinese missionaries are doing in Africa, and also to gain some understanding of the cultural background of my African students (there are quite a few studying at the university I am working in). Little did I realize that the Lord had prepared such a splendid spiritual feast for all of us…

I have been ministered to in a personal way by Elder Li Chien's Bible studies, challenged and moved by Christine's report of the conditions of AIDS patients, encouraged by the testimonies and contributions of missionaries like you and your wife in Africa, and awakened by Rev Oscar's and Rev Ally's timely and insightful messages. I shall never think of Africa or Kenya in the same way after listening to them…

I have been to a couple of short-term mission trips prior to this one but I think this is the most well-organized of them all. A big thank you to James and Antonia Hwang and to you and Dominica for your excellent oversight and logistics arrangements. All the details were carefully thought out, our safety, health and comfort were given top priority. My heart is deeply touched by your thoughtfulness…

I have no suggestion to offer for further improvement because there is nothing to improve. Both James and Antonia and you have done your level best to give us a meaningful visit and you have achieved your goal.”

Jeanette Lim from Malaysia, Conference Interpreter, Administrator of Sunway University College

“This was the most touching, inspiring and thought provoking conference I have ever attended.”

Rev Jonathan Chiu from the USA, Opening Ceremony Speaker, International Director of Care Ministries International

Thanks again for all that you've done!!! Without you couple there'd be no such a conference!!!”

Dora Sze from Hongkong, Editor of Chinese Around The World, CCCOWE

“I enjoyed the women’s sharing time where we can be opened and shared our struggles and difficulties in the field.

The Bible study, the preaching of Rev. Oscar was very challenging, Dr. Jeffrey challenged about HIV-AIDS and the commissioning to those who will join the discovery trip, those who will stay in Kenya and those who will go back to their fields.

…the growing Chinese population in Africa was an eye opener to me to consider also in reaching the Chinese who are now migrating and working in Africa. If we will not reach them a time will come when their host countries particularly the major religion will convert them. One of the speakers told us that once they were out of China they want to stay in the new country and don’t want to go back to China. I shared this need to some Chinese co-workers working in Africa and some of them got my new vision in also considering working with them and not only to the Africans.” A missionary in North Africa

“I will keep myself obedient to the Lord's next leading to Africa.  Whenever I am moved to pray for the need in Africa, I will faithfully present my intercessions sacrifice.

I believe that your whole family has made a "historic" contribution in Chinese mission record.”

Rev Paul Chi from Taiwan,

“a. It was good message from Rev. Lam. It was appropriate to us.
b. It might be good to have more time for intimate sharing during the retreat time.

A. We could get a lot of good information and encouragement from others. AIDS/HIV was good topic to us and the sharing from Christine was very touching and moving.
B. During the conference, we have learned and we have heard a lot…

We continue to provide more Short term mission opportunities for churches participate so that people can catch the vision of Africa.”

Rev Joshua Siu from Ghana, Missionary of WEC International, Ghana

”I would encourage partnership with the African churches, probably to begin with, encourage short term discovery trips which should be hosted by the African church and mission organizations in Africa so that there is developing of relationships. I would do a great job of networking.”

Lydia Teera from Uganda, Missionary of Wycliffe Africa, Uganda

”Thanks so much for organizing the conference! I believe you all had put in much effort to get it to work so well especially in Africa! I give the conf a high rating as a whole.”

Dr Stanley Ling, Regional Director of SIM East Asia

I have been involved in prayer for major religion. SL’s sharing is confirming also enlightening my prayer journey. I am still seeking God's will and hope to organise meeting to understand the strategy of reaching them....”

Rebekah Chong from Malaysia,

“a. We had excellent preachers from Asia, Europe and local.

 b. The local preachers really contributed amazing insights to the congregation, not only bringing brain storming to our mind of mission but also challenging our attitude of being a servant of the Lord.

c. Sharing of different missionaries enriched my knowledge of the many ways in which the Lord uses various vessels to achieve His plan.

d. All the interpreters are highly appreciated.

e. All issues of the group discussions are worthily to talk through but time was not enough so that rush conclusion was made sometimes.

f. New Life Home visit is very good idea for solidifying what we have heard from the seminar. (hear and then see)

A. When I go back to the field I will work harder in learning the local

Language and culture as well as spending time with the people.

B. Digest, integrate and reflect on what I heard, saw and experienced through the conference.

C. Pray more concretely and perservantly for the people and countries in Africa.

D. To share in my sharing and preaching the vision of the various opportunities today of missions in Africa for the Chinese churches.

E. Apply some of the suggestions to our short term mission training and missionary candidates counselling.”

Rev May Yau from Ghana, WEC International

Thank God for giving us a special opportunity to meet with old friends and to get to know many new friends.  The sharing from Rev. On Kwok Lim and Rev. Morley Lee were remarkably sweet and came to the point!  It was a very precious reminder especially from Rev. Lee's talk about the family issues.  A million thanks to HIM!

The involvement from every single participant was so encouraging.  I can say that the Spirit was moving at the place.  I believe most of the participants if not all will be forging to a high level of serving HIM.

I'll continue to do more teaching about how to reach the unreached.  If the Lord open doors for me, I love to visit as many churches as possible and share about the urgent needs of this field.” A missionary in East Africa

I will continue to serve in Missions Board, SCAC, Malaysia and also mobilize church members to do missions.”

Rev Lisa Ting from Malaysia, Pastor of Wesley Methodist Church

I found this Conference very encouraging in many ways: the messages were very stimulating and revolutionary, the fellowship with the participants was indeed wonderful, I specially like the cozy atmosphere in this Conference, and I enjoyed very much with the praise and worship…  Now that I am back in school (CGST), I hope to find a chance to share with my schoolmates and professors about this Conference and the needs in Africa.”

Virginia Chon from Canada, Conference Interpreter

Many thanks again for your excellent arrangement and preparation for this important CCOWE in Kenya.”

Rev Frank Tuan from Republic of South Africa, Discovery Team Leader, Missionary of SIM

“We thank the Lord for your wonderful and faithful service in managing this wonderful conference.”

Elder Manchild Yu from the USA, Conference Prayer Leader, Elder of Rutgers Community Christian Church

“We praise God for using you in a great way for this CCCOWE event!”

Dr James Hwang from Kenya, Conference Discovery Team Leader, AIM Missionary

Urgent Need-

The Uganda-Tanzania Branch has had a struggle to find managers. We have a need for managers in three key leadership roles – Language Programs Manager for Uganda, and two Team Leaders for current and future cluster projects in Tanzania. These are critical needs at present. Please pray for God to send workers to these areas. We are looking for gifted managers with good people skills.

We have a desperate need for a teacher for Entebbe, Uganda for August 2008. We also need a teacher for Mara, Tanzania for 2009.

Please add to your teacher need prayers today the need for a tutor for Postmuses in Mbeya, Tanzania. Aug 08

Support Personnel in PNG

Our colleagues in Papua New Guinea have made us aware of these urgent personel needs. Find out the details by exploring the links.

·      Finance Manager     http://www.wycliffe.org.au/html/vacancies/job013.htm

·      Secondary English Teacher     http://www.wycliffe.org.au/html/vacancies/job010.htm

Other teaching opportunities are also available.

Teachers in Africa

Our colleagues from Africa have let us know about their urgent need for teachers.

Bamako Christian Academy, a school that was formed through an association of parents (Mali Educational Association), needs teachers to fill the following positions for the 2007-2008 school year. Most of the children are children of missionaries from various agencies.

·      First Grade teacher

·      Second/Third Grade Combined teacher

·      Sixth to Eleventh Grade Mathematics teacher

·      Sixth to Eleventh Grade Science teacher

·      Two Tutors for two SIL translators' families are also needed for the 2007-2008 school year. Tutors do not have to be qualified teachers but need a love for children and desire to teach them.

Hillcrest Inter Mission School in Jos, Nigeria    www.hillcrestschool.net

The minimum length of commitment is as short as one school year for some of these positions. Typically those filling the positions need a degree or equivalent teacher training qualifications.

Thanks for your partnership with us,

Daniel & Dominica Lai

Wycliffe Prayer Focus Bulletin, April 21-27, 2008

Bible translation awareness seminars: Ethiopia. Praise God for two seminars held in March and April.
In March, 17 denominational leaders and 13 agencies that work alongside the Church, such as The Bible Society, Bible League, Campus Crusade, Scripture Union and World Vision, attended. One encouraging reaction was, "How can we be involved?" The leader-participants expressed the need for such seminars to be held in various regions and for all churches to be included; so a second one was held in April in Awassa. Ask God to bless plans to conduct such seminars twice a year, especially in regions in Ethiopia where Bibleless people live.

Global Day of Prayer: worldwide. The vision of the Global Day of Prayer international committee is to see all 220 nations of the world participate. The date is May 11, Pentecost Sunday. Currently 186 nations have registered. Worldwide prayer is also encouraged for ten days leading up to Pentecost, May 1-11. Please join in especially on Wednesday May 7 when the focus is for "the Bible to be translated for the thousands of people groups without even one verse in their language." The guide is available in 32 languages at www.globaldayofprayer.com.

Students study with people groups: Nigeria. From January to May, 2008, 10 Bible translation students from the Translation Degree Program of The Theological College of Northern Nigeria are out on location among people who speak 10 different languages that have translation needs. Their objective is to build relationships, begin language learning, and complete a basic written grammatical description of the language and a plan for translation. The investment of their lives in Bible translation is exactly what is needed for the huge remaining need in Nigeria. Pray for the Lord of the harvest to watch carefully over their lives and keep them encouraged.

Broadcaster needed: Africa. A team focusing on a language group in Africa has been searching for two years for a gifted local speaker to introduce Christian programs for satellite TV broadcasting in the region and to give a closing challenge to viewers. Now a believer is considering taking on this key role. Pray for him as he thinks about this, looks at the cost and decides whether to accept the job.

Gathering force of prayer needed: all over the earth. Jesus said, "This gospel of the kingdom will be preached in the whole world as a testimony to all nations, and then the end will come" Matthew 24:14. There are still about 250 million people who do not have Scripture in an understandable form. There are countless, vigorous Christian prayer movements spanning many countries of the world today. Ask God to unite Christians in prayer worldwide for this vital part of what remains to be done, the Bible made accessible to all.

Permission is granted for readers to share the information widely with others who will pray.

What HE is doing in the World of Bible Translation….

“God continues to allow us to participate in the greatest acceleration in Bible translation the world has ever seen! Nearly 40% of the languages in which there is currently Bible translation activity did not have such activity seven years ago...that is new projects among 539 language communities potentially impacting over 160 million people!

Based on continuing research and evaluation, we now estimate that Bible translation may still be needed in approximately 2,286 languages. This number shows a significant drop from the 1999 estimate of 3,000 languages still possibly needing Bible translation. The difference of 714 includes the 539 languages in which work has begun during the past seven years. The decrease of an additional 175 languages is based on updated knowledge of these languages and their needs.” John Watters, Executive Director. 2007

Husked Coconut
God’s Word in the mother tongue speaks not only to the head, but also to the heart. One Pacific island Christian said, "When we read the English Bible, it's like trying to eat the husk of the coconut. But you (the translator) have husked the coconut for us and opened it. Now we can eat the actual meat."
